Brutalist Washington

The huge, menacing hulk of the FBI building, which dominates downtown DC may be replaced. Fans of this architectural style, called Brutalism, will find quite a few examples in this city, especially if getting around by Metro. But the style is more often hated than loved. Oddly, the Brutalist movement had its origins in idealism, but its effect is the projection of raw power.

Brutalist buildings flourished on college campuses in the era of Flower Power, and garnered a reputation as bulwarks against uppity students.
