Urban Moderne

These two bas relief panels by two artists in the Classical Moderne style flank an outdoor stairway at the DC Municipal Center. On top, John Gregory depicted courts, hospitals, business and sanitation through allegorical figures, and Lee Lawrie depicted on the bottom panel, the figure Columbia and figures representing light, water and thoroughfare. Together the two panels represent urban life. The bottom panel, begun in 1940, was not completed until 1978 by Harold C. Vogel.
