Admiral David G. Farragut stands in Farragut Square, a busy park in downtown DC. "Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!" is a version of a phrase he actually uttered during the Civil War. He was the first U.S. naval officer to attain the rank of Admiral. Sculptor Lavinia Ellen Ream Hoxie created the statue, which was dedicated in 1881.
