The pedestal of the James A. Garfield monument is an elaborate affair, with three bas-relief plaques related to three figures below, representing Garfield as scholar, soldier and statesman. This plaque, above a reading figure, relates to Garfield's early career as a teacher. By John Quincy Adams Ward and dedicated in 1887.
