A detail of Columbus Fountain at Union Station in Washington, DC shows a figurehead, traditionally a symbolic figure carved into the prow of a ship. A winged figure signifies the spirit of victory. Designed by Lorado Zadoc Taft in 1912, his memorial to Columbus no longer functions as a fountain.
