This statue of Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Presbyterian minister, was relocated to a traffic island on a busy stretch of Connecticut Avenue in 1966 when the National Presbyterian Church where it originally stood was torn down. By William Couper, it was originally installed in 1909.
