One of the most celebrated of the men who fought for American independence was the French aristocrat Major General Marquis Gilbert de Lafayette. He became an important aide to General Washington, enduring the Valley Forge winter by his side. He helped win the last land battle of the war at Yorktown. This sculpture was created by Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguiere, it was installed in 1891 in the square named for him across from the White House.
