This equestrian statue of Civil War Major General George Henry Thomas in Thomas Circle by John Quincy Adams Ward was dedicated in 1879. Thomas earned the name "Rock of Chickamauga" for his defense in that Civil War battle. A son of Virginia who fought for the Union, he won several decisive battles in western campaigns.
