Garfield's Circle

This statue of the assassinated President Garfield was erected by Society of the Army of the Cumberland with whom Garfield served during the Civil War. The 1887 sculpture by John Quincy Adams Ward has stood in his own circle near the US Capitol since 1975 and pays tribute to Garfield's long Congressional career before being elected President. He served only four months in that office until his untimely death at the hand of an assassin.
