Sakharov was an important player in the Soviet Union's development nuclear weaponry, yet later in life was internally exiled for advocating for civil liberties in the country. The bust stands outside Russia House, an organization promoting US-Russian relations. The bust was created by Russian emigre artist Peter Shapiro around 1989.
