October 28, 1965 is the day the St. Louis arch came together. The project had begun as an effort to build the national monument to Jefferson in St. Louis, but Roosevelt, at the same time, championed the Jefferson memorial on the Tidal Basin in Washington. Thirty years passed since President Roosevelt signed the order to begin the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis. The Washington memorial to Jefferson was complete before the St. Louis project had a design.

The Twenty-Seventh City had once aspired to be the first city. After the Civil War, St. Louis hosted the National Capital Removal Convention.
