Andrew Jackson, Slave Master

November 08, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

As a wealthy southern plantation owner, Andrew Jackson owned and traded as many as 300 people over the course of his life. After his death, reminiscences of a house slave named Hannah, who remembered Jackson fondly, helped place Jackson squarely within  the myth of the benevolent slave master. While Jackson may have treated some slaves well in comparison to other owners, he had  no qualms about using violence to keep his property in line.

Tennessee was an early haven for abolitionists, but pro-slavery attitudes increasingly prevailed during Jackson's lifetime.
