Carol M. Highsmith has made photographs in every state. What's more remarkable than the quality or breadth of her work is the fact that she donated her life's work to the Library of Congress and the archive is in the public domain, free from restrictions of any kind.
She started her photographic career at Washington DC's abandoned Willard Hotel in 1980. Hard to believe this high-end, historic hotel was once a ruin. Although the story that the word lobbyist was coined there is apparently a myth.
