When the brightest star in the night, Sirius, the dog star, disappears when it moves too close to the sun, we are in the Dog Days of summer. Sirius is in Canis Major (the Big Dog) but there are other dog constellations. The dog days last for 20 days before and 20 days after the star comes closest to the sun - today, the 23rd of July. Twenty days to go!
What we can see in the night sky - using x-rays - is a massive black hole in a group of galaxies 105 million light years away:
