Happy Birthday, Nuclear Arms Race

August 29, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb. Not only did it start a race for newer and better nukes, the hunt for Soviet spies was on. Stalin, seeing the American atomic bombs go off in 1945, had ordered his scientists to make one within five years. It only took four because they weren't starting from scratch. When the news broke, Americans wondered how it had happened so fast.

Now we wonder why Japanese make the peace sign.
