A Traitor's Reasons

Benedict Arnold was already a hero on the American side of the War for Independence, having been instrumental in the victories at the battles of Saratoga and Valcour Island, when he went over to the other side. Although Arnold was deeply unhappy with his compensation and treatment by the provisional American government, evidence suggests his young wife Peggy encouraged his treachery and certainly facilitated it. From a family of Philadelphia loyalists, she put her husband in touch with a British intelligence officer of her acquaintance. Arnold then made a deal to give up West Point and Washington himself for 20,000 pounds. That British officer, Major Andre, was caught but Arnold escaped.

Benedict Arnold lived out his days as a man who no one trusted. The only US monument to him does not mention his name.
