After the Titanic went down on April 12, 1912, J. Bruce Ismay became the man everyone loved to hate. He had survived when many women and children had not, giving rise to stories that he had dressed as a woman to get on one of the few lifeboats. That was untrue, but the facts remained: he was the managing director of the White Star Line, and was quoted saying he did not want lifeboats "cluttering up my decks." The Titanic could have had many more lifeboats, if not for his decision. But in the chaos of the evacuation, many boats left with fewer passengers than they could hold.
Ismay told the Senate, investigating the tragedy, that he turned away and did not witness the ship break in half and sink.
