Prisoner No. 9653

It is hard to imagine in 2015 that a man could run for president from behind the bars of a federal penitentiary and receive almost a million votes. Eugene Debs, Socialist Party candidate in 1920, was in prison for speaking out against American involvement in the first World War. Under The Espionage Act, he was arrested and convicted for words which could have caused a man hearing them to resist the draft.

Debs was the most well known among many others jailed for expressing opposition to the war. Debs was pardoned by President Harding, who wanted to meet the famous rabblerouser.
